Protect Our Trails

MnUSA encourages our members to contact your state legislators.
Contact information for your legislators can be found at:

http://www.gis.leg.mn/OpenLayers/districts

MnUSA's priorities for the Minnesota legislature are:

  • Protection of the integrity of the Snowmobile Dedicated Account Protect against raids on the account for non-snowmobile related uses. The snowmobile dedicated account is funded by snowmobile registration tax, snowmobile trail fees and unrefunded gas tax attributed to snowmobile use. Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association believes funds in this account should only be used to provide the snowmobile opportunity in Minnesota.

  • Protection of the unrefunded gas tax attributed to snowmobile use. The gas tax paid on fuel purchased for snowmobile use provides approximately 1/3rd of the funding for the snowmobile program. Without such funding, trail maintenance and grooming, and enforcement and safety programs would suffer greatly. When trails are adequately funded, they can be properly maintained, creating a more enjoyable and a safer trail experience for the snowmobilers who paid for this recreational opportunity. Good trails increase tourism, generate income for local businesses and taxes for the State.

  • Protection of the use of snowmobiles on public land. Snowmobiles have been allowed on state owned land since their inception. Land sales and subdivisions have a significant impact on the 22,000 mile snowmobile trail network in Minnesota, a trail network which generates millions of tourism dollars to Minnesota. Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association supports the continued responsible use of snowmobiles on State land and on easements purchased by the State, and will oppose legislation that prohibits or limits such use.

  • Permit studded snowmobile tracks on asphalt unless prohibited by the Commissioner of DNR. Snowmobilers have maintained miles of snowmobile (multi-use) trails which have become, or are in the process of becoming, asphalt bicycle trails in other seasons. It is not always feasible to build an alternate trail for snowmobiles with studded tracks. In addition, businesses along the trail suffer economically when their winter customers are relocated. Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association supports legislation that will allow studded snowmobile tracks on asphalt trails unless the Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources determines it is not appropriate, on a trail by trail basis.

  • Reduce the tort liability limit on recreational trails to $1 million. Historically snowmobile clubs have been required to carry insurance in the amount of $1 million. Recently the legislature has changed the law and increased the insurance requirement by 50% to $1.5 million. There is no increase in legal judgments or exposure to necessitate this increase. The additional insurance premiums cause financial hardship to the clubs. MnUSA supports amending the law to restore the $1 million coverage requirement.

The Sno-Baron's Snowmobile Club stopped by the Northern Pine Riders clubhouse while on a club ride and presented them with a $1000 check from their trail grant program. The club has begun a project to widen a section of our trail from Co Rd 43 and I-35 Jct south to Dago Lake Rd, a distance of approximately 1.2 miles. A combination of heavy traffic and narrowness results in this section becoming virtually unrideable well ahead of the rest of the trail system. Part of this section is a major connector to trails to the east and is a connector to services desired by trail users. The project involves removing timber and its stumps plus dozing and grading work to achieve a level trail base. MnDNR concurs with the need to widen this segment.

While we were there the Northern Pine Riders showed us around their beautiful clubhouse and provided snacks and refreshments. Thank you for all the hard work you do maintaing the local trails for everyone to enjoy.

Each year the Sno Barons set aside a portion of the profits from the September Hay Days grass drag race and give it back to the snowmobiling community to support trail development and improvements. The average grant is about $1,000, and will be used for trail expansion, re-routing, bridge work, fencing and signage.

Sno-Barons Named Club of the Year

The International Snowmobile Hall of Fame (ISHOF) in Eagle River, Wisconsin, recently named the Sno-Barons Snowmobile Club of Blaine, Minnesota, as the Snowmobile Club of the Year. It’s the first year the award has been given out by ISHOF. “ISHOF is very excited to create this new annual award and to name the Sno-Barons as the first recipient. They are truly an inspiration to all clubs and the grand sport of snowmobiling.” Said Scott Eilertson, ISHHOF president. The official presentation will be made this fall at the Induction Ceremony held in Eagle River as they induct the ISHOF class of 2010 and present the Groomer of the Year award.
